This house is across the street and down a couple from Dad's childhood home. A widow and her daughter (10 or so years older than dad) live there. Dad's mom would have him shovel the snow from their walks like a good boy but with no pay. Does leave you wondering?

Necco Wafers Go All Natural

Charles Krupa, APThe iconic Necco Wafer is going au naturale.The revamped product is now using red beet juice, purple cabbage, cocoa powder, paprika and turmeric to replace the artificial ingredients that had been flavoring and coloring the wafers for years.But not every wafer made the cut.Of the eight original Necco wafers, lime did not get through the makeover. While the lime flavor could be created with natural ingredients, the color green itself was too hard to duplicate, so it was scrapped. However, it may return once the color code is cracked, according to brand manager, Aimee Scott.So there are now seven flavors and colors: chocolate, lemon, orange, clove, wintergreen, cinnamon and licorice. The chocolate wafer, however, now comes in four varieties: dark, milk, mocha and white."The flavor is actually a little bit stronger in the new ones because they are all natural," Jackie Hague, Necco's vice president for marketing, told Slashfood. "And when you look at them, they're pastel and not as bright as they used to be."So if longtime Necco eaters can get past the change in color, Hague thinks they won't be disappointed in the quality of taste.Necco, an acronym for New England Confectionery Company, is the oldest multi-line candy company in the United States -- dating back to 1847. It is also famous for timeless confections like the Valentine's Day staple Sweethearts' Conversation Hearts or the peanut butter-and-molasses chews, Mary Jane.

I'm always thinking of update information I should post - then I forget to do it.

You may know about this "update" but just in case you don't I'll post it -- it has been a very long time coming - should have done it over a year ago when I first "discovered" it.

We went for a beach ride and as we turned left to drive along West Cliff I noticed the sign: DREAM INN! I was pretty excited. "The name is back". I went home and looked up the information but didn't post it - I should have it, was more than a year ago. I don't think I've even thought to say anything about it. It looks 'normal' so you may not have noticed. Here's a paragraph from the article late last summer.

During a public contest earlier this year, the community was invited to

rename the Coast Santa Cruz Hotel. After more than 800 suggestions were

received, all strongly recommending the hotel be officially honored with its

original name, the decision was made to seek out patented rights to use its

original name. "The Santa Cruz Dream Inn is an iconic property that deserves

an iconic name and we are pleased that this name relates to our vision for the

redesign of the hotel, and fulfills the community's dream as well," said Chip

Conley, Founder and CEO of Joie de Vivre.

Memorial Day in Utah County

I went down to Nate and Carrie's for Memorial Day. Carrie cut some of the Iris from their backyard and we put them on the Hales and Burrows graves.

(Was that cement base always there? I thought I remembered the gravestone sinking down on one side. Maybe they fixed it or maybe that's the Rockwood headstone I'm thinking of)

It looks like two other people beat us to it and there were mums and geraniums on both gravesites.

Simon got free a couple times. He really liked the pinwheels.

Then we drove back from Springville and Spanish Fork to Orem...

...along the way Simon taught me some gang signs he knew... what are they showing on Sesame Street these days???

Then Nate ground up some meat (finger meat) and we had some really good bacon burgers.

For Memorial Day

Memorial Day

Dad and I had a nice memorial day. We went - once again - to the memorial program at Los Gatos cemetery; put some nice flowers on Emily's grandparent's grave. The program is always fun with band music - talks (this year by 4 "waves" - they were really fun) plus wreath placing, dove release, gun salutes, & of course a well done flag ceremony: plus free food. Hot dogs, doughnuts and drinks and flags for everyone (we also put our flags on the Burton's graves.

Lots of nice people there.

Here's a patriotic picture of Dad/Grandpa. You don't see this everyday!!! It was taken at the Empire State building - at about 1:30 in the morning. We didn't waste our time while in New York City - used every minute.
